Such Is Life

grackul:

piercing cry
from feathered lion
high above its prey

sharp eyes,
gold-brown and glinting,
latch onto mice, onto mouse

silent wings,
swooping with the warm currents
and folding safely close
to dive dive and dive
into the grasses
of the newly blooded field
and

piercing cry
from furred beetle
thought it was safe
on the prairie floor

twitching nose
and rotating ears
took no notice of flying doom
and so it cries
the end
